SH Valencia Palace – Cost Blanca

Golfers are spoilt for choice when they book into SH Valencia Palace, which sits in a quiet area a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. Heavy hitters Club de Golf Escorpión, Club de Golf El Bosque and Campo de Golf El Saler are all a short drive away when you stay in one of the hotel’s 239 elegant rooms. Choose between three restaurants to become better acquainted with local cuisine or, after a long day on the fairways, head for the spa and try the aromatic showers, Turkish bath, sauna, Jacuzzi or a therapeutic massage. For some sightseeing, head across the road and marvel at the ornate Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall. https://www.hotel-valencia-palace.com/en/

Club de Golf El Bosque – Cost Blanca

If you want to know why Robert Trent Jones Sr. is regarded as such brilliant golf course designer, take a gander at Club de Golf El Bosque in Valencia. Sitting at the foot of a mountain surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, the 18 holes here, opened in 1975, are pretty as a picture. A deep ravine cutting across the course means players have to negotiate some wavy terrain – beautiful to look at but a tough nut to crack when trying to find a good position on the fairway. Not resting on its laurels, the club has made significant improvements to every aspect of the course in recent years including the greens, irrigation systems and bunkers. https://www.elbosquegolf.com/en/#

Campo de Golf El Saler – Costa Blanca

Regarded as the crown jewel of designer Javier Arana’s career, El Saler has a location that’s hard to beat – inside the lush Albufera Nature Park right next to the glistening Gulf of Valencia. Mirroring the club’s snug location between forest and water, the course here has a pleasingly varied terrain with some holes bordering huge sand dunes and others emerging from behind a sea of umbrella pines. The variation continues when it comes the routing with no consecutive holes orientated in the same direction, meaning golfers have to assess how the wind will impact their shots around every turn. Elevated greens further adds to what is a course that makes you work for a good score. https://paradores.es/es/golf

Santander Golf Club

When banking group Grupo Santander wanted to reward its staff with a top-class golf course, they identified a patch of land about 10 minutes from the centre of Madrid and started digging and planting trees. The fruit of their labours is the Santander Golf Club, a modern (it opened for play in 2005), eco-friendly 18 holes designed by Reese Jones and considered one of the very best in Europe. Lakes, streams and gargantuan bunkers all go into the mix on what is, at almost 7,500 yards, one of Spain’s longest courses. Santander’s narrow dimensions means you’ll have to play straight or spend the day finding ways to get out of trouble. https://www.golfsantander.es/

La Cala Resort – Costa del Sol

No fewer than three superb championship courses – each one integrated beautifully into the undulating surrounding countryside – are available at the La Cala Resort in sunny Málaga. Campo America has dreamy views of Sierra de Ojén and the Mediterranean Sea and relatively few bunkers, meaning you can put everything into your drives. Campio Asia, the oldest of the three courses, is notorious for its narrow layout and four brutal par 5 holes. The trip around the world concludes with Campo Europa, which is tad easier with its generous fairways and includes five bridges across the River Ojén. https://www.lacala.com/golf/

Camiral Golf and Wellness - Catalunya

Home to two 18-hole championship courses, one of the largest practice facilities in Europe and a PGA Academy, Camiral Golf and Wellness can rightly claim to be the home of golf in Catalunya. The showstopper on its long list of facilities is the Stadium Course, consistently ranked among the best 10 golf courses in Europe and a regular host of numerous PGA European Tour events. Experience what the pros have to deal with as trees crowd fairways and well-placed bunkers and lakes focus the mind on every hole. To give your nerves a rest, try the Tour Course, which has bunkers that are a bit more forgiving of wayward strokes. https://www.camiral.com/en/golf/

Club de Golf Escorpión – Costa Blanca

Club de Golf Escorpión in Bétera has steadily grown since 1969, starting with the peerless Ron Kirby laying out the Azul course, comprising the Masía and Lagos nines. Local architect Alfonso Vidaor added the Neuvo nine early in the new millennium, followed in 2005 by a par 3 development course to cement Club de Golf Escorpión’s status as the ultimate golf hub in the region. Bordered by pine trees and former orange orchards and featuring a number of lakes, the 27 holes here never disappoint, especially when you can improve your game at two chipping greens, two putting greens, a driving range and swing analysis centre.

Alhaurín Golf Club

Offering sweeping views of the Sierra de Mijas mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, Alhaurín is one of the prettiest places in Spain to swing a club. Not that you can spend too much time enjoying the vistas with a tricky 18-hole, par 72 course lying in wait. Designed by golfing royalty Seve Ballesteros, Alhaurín is laid out across hilly terrain, making it challenging for good players and fun for the hit-and-hope brigade. Get stuck into five par 3 holes, five par 5 holes and eight par 4 holes, all with very different, original designs. There’s also a 9-hole, par 3 course that’s not only a great place to introduce yourself to the game but ideal for practicing your short game. www.alhauringolf.com

La Galiana Golf Resort

Around 200 hectares of Mediterranean forest combine with 60 hectares of golf course to make La Galiana a truly special place, especially when you throw in a wellness spa, fitness area and gourmet restaurant with stunning views of the valley it calls home. The course is a masterclass in how to make the most of the surrounding area, with each of the 18 holes blending beautifully into the green, mountainous terrain. Highlights include The Snake – the par 5 4th hole where many a player have been bitten by an intimidating double dogleg – and the par 3 Orange Tree 16th hole, which is closely guarded by three bunkers.

Calanova Golf Club

Located in the Mijas Golf Valley in the foothills above sunny La Cala de Mijas, Calanova Golf Club is so close to the sea you can almost feel the ocean spray. An absolute breeze to get to, six of the 18 holes at Calanova (11 to 16) hugs the busy Autopista AP-7 coastal road. The tricky course, designed by Julián García, is peppered with cleverly placed hazards including a small lake that spices up the closing holes on the front and back nine. Another small pond sits pretty in the middle of a trio of holes (from the 5th to the 7th), while as number of left dog-legging fairways will test your skills to the maximum. www.calanovagolf.es

Chaparral Golf Club

Designed by Pepe Gancedo, knows as the ‘Picasso of Golf’, Chaparral is indeed a masterpiece. An 18-hole parkland forest course in a protected area on the Costa Del Sol, the course takes full advantage of its beguiling surroundings by snaking along the shape of the original terrain. In addition to panoramic views, the club’s location makes it the perfect place to combine golf with some sightseeing – Chaparral is less than 20 minutes from the charming Old Town of Marbella, while Fuengirola, with its wide selection of restaurants, is also a short drive away. www.golfelchaparral.com

Paradores

Paradores knows a thing or two about what makes golfers happy – the chain’s superior courses in Spain combining great design with jaw-dropping settings. For instance, at the sand dune-lined Parador de El Saler you have Albufera Natural Park and its freshwater lagoon on the one side and the Mediterranean on the other. At Parador de Málaga you can access the golf course straight from your room, while Parador de Córdoba is home to the first golf school in Cordoba and has a 9-hole Pitch & Putt (with lengths of between 41 and 56m), and a 140m practice tee with 20 stations. www.paradores.es/en/golf

Mijas Golf Club

Tradition meets innovation at Mijas on the Costa del Sol where two Robert Trent Jones Snr-designed courses have been given a trilling makeover. The stand-out feature at Los Lagos – the bigger of the two – is the remarkable ‘Bridge Ball’ that sees players pass through a white orb as they walk over one of the nine lakes that gave the course its name. Other changes made in 2012 include larger greens and paths to accommodate buggies all year round. Meanwhile, Los Olivos, as the name suggests, has an abundance of trees to go with smaller, undulating (and very well guarded) greens that make it a playground for those with a bit more precision in their game. www.mijasgolf.org

Rio Real Golf Club

The Rio Real river in Marbella not only gave this golf club its name but also forms an integral part of the course, right up to point where it meets the Mediterranean. Designed by Javier Arana, seen by many as the best Spanish designer of all time, Rio Real offers 18 holes (more than 6,000m) of gorgeous greens and tree-lined fairways, with seafront-facing holes coming with magnificent ocean views. Small wonder the course has been recognised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as one of the best in Spain. Rounding off the experience is the cutting-edge Rio Real Golf Academy, where experts will assess your swing dimensions using 3D biomechanics analysis and a plasma screen. www.rioreal.com

Santana Golf Club

Starting life as one of Europe’s largest avocado plantations, the land Santana occupies was transformed into a world-class golf course between 2002 and 2003 under the watchful eye of architect Cabell B. Robinson. While it may be newer than a lot of other golf courses in Spain, Santana has a timeless feel to it, fitting seamlessly into 138 acres of wonderful parkland. The attention to detail is clear on every hole, whether it’s the clever placement of the water features, manicured greens or bunkers filled with sand from crushed marble. A large variety of trees – eucalyptus, orange, lemon, olive and (of course) avocado, ensure the course has a lovely, lush backdrop. www.santanagolf.com

AC Málaga Palacio Hotel

Conveniently located between the Málaga Cathedral and the Paseo del Parque, the AC Malaga Palacio Hotel is a great choice for golfers who want to explore Málaga when they’re not on the course. You’ll start the day with unrivalled views of the port, before moving on to must-see attractions like the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba, Castillo de Gibralfaro, Calle Marqués de Larios street and La Malagueta Beach. Back at the hotel you can enjoy a menu or regional specialities or relax by the rooftop pool. When you’re ready to hit the fairways, golf courses like Real Club De Campo Málaga and Club El Candado are only about 15 minutes’ drive away. www.marriott.com/
