ABOUT MONS

European city of culture in 2015, Mons is a lovely and quite lively university city, and an excellent base for some great golf. There is plenty of WW1 history, breweries and a lovely main square. Around 2 hours from arriving in France, following an easy fast-route drive, you can be on the golf course. 10-20 minutes from the city centre lie the local courses, others are slightly further away, but complement the 2 local parkland courses. Our hotels have parking and you don’t need the car for your evening stroll to some great eateries, from simple brasseries to Michelin stars.

MONS GOLF COURSES

Royal Golf Club du Hainaut

NB: the 3 9-hole loops offer the above combinations of 18 holes

Landscape: Undulating, rolling plains.

Description: Designed by Simpson and overhauled by Hawtree, the narrow, tree-lined fairways, clumps of heather and small greens make this a challenge, but a delight, to play.

Facilities: Good, friendly clubhouse, including restaurant.

Our view: The whole complex is magnificently well maintained and is chosen to host major amateur competitions…no wonder.

Mont Garni Golf Club

Landscape: Parkland, flat

Description: An easy to walk course, set within trees, with 4 holes within a more open aspect, set in front of the clubhouse.

Facilities: Charming, Anglo-Norman half-timbered clubhouse, a wedding gift to the current owner!

Our View: Well-maintained. Welcoming ambience.

Golf Château Tournette - English

Landscape: Rolling parkland, set within a mature forest.

Description: Designed by M. Hawtree in 1988. Wide fairways, large greens.

Facilities: Impressive white- washed walls form courtyard around which all the club’s buildings stand. All you need is here, including clubhouse restaurant, terrace and meeting rooms. Full practice facilities, too.

Our view: A good course, but perhaps not quite as challenging as the American course.

Golf Château Tournette - American

Landscape: Parkland, with numerous lakes.

Description: Undulating and and makes the very most of the landscape. Upgraded by Alliss & Clark in 1991.

Facilities: Impressive white-washed walls form courtyard around which all the club’s buildings stand. Lovely clubhouse restaurant, terrace and meeting rooms. Full practice facilities, too.

Our view: Has several ‘signature holes’ and as a customer favourite, on the ‘must play’ list.

Golf Club D'Hulencourt - Genappe

Landscape: Gently rolling countryside.

Description: Large, undulating greens and generous fairways. Excellent maintenance. Rossi [designed Belle Dune, Picardy] who knows how to use the environment, has added lakes and elevated tees to increase interest.

Facilities: Driving range and full practice facility. Clubhouse serving snacks and full meals, terrace in summer, all set in historic manor and farm buildings. Air of a ‘gentleman’s club’. Separate dining room, if required for groups. Boutique.

Our view: An American-style course in good condition, and a very friendly welcome and service in the clubhouse.

Golf Club de Pierpoint

Landscape: Open landscape, close to the Waterloo monument.

Description: 18 holes and a compact 5-hole adjacent to practice facilities. The course is quite open to the elements, and the difficulty will depend on the weather. The undulating greens are well guarded, so precise play is required to score well.

Facilities: On-site hotel with18 guest rooms, set within the converted farmhouse buildings surrounding the clubhouse. Groups catered for, as residents and possibility of playing other courses in a stay and play package.

Our view: Very friendly set-up, used to international clientele.

Golf Club Enghien Arenberg

Landscape: Gently undulating parkland with numerous lakes.

Description: Set within a beautiful and historic park, dating back to 15c. The Arenberg course was designed by Bruno Steensels and the 18 holes was completed in June 2015. There is also a short 9-hole practice course.

Facilities: Clubhouse is housed in a former hunting lodge with great views from the terrace. Good restaurant, full practice facilities.

Our view: Although the completion of the last nine holes was only in 2015, the course has settled down very quickly. The newer 9 have a links-like feel.
