Hauts-De-France

Le Touquet

Le Touquet, or ‘Paris Plage’ as it is known locally, is a much larger, year-round seaside destination. Much more commercialised, it has a true ‘town centre’ and casinos, horse-racing and its own small airport, too. For much of last centrury, a prized destination for the UK’s rich and famous, as well as royalty, its reputation as a short break resort is long established. The town hosts many events, sporting and cultural, motorbike and car rallies to opera…something for everyone, though golfers would be advised to stay away at peak weekends. The golf courses have a reputation stretching far and wide and justifiably so…proximity to the UK and affordability draw golfers back, time and again.

Montreuil-sur Mer

Inland is Montreuil-sur Mer, nowadays a misnomer, as the sea is long departed form the historic walled old town. The town offers wonderful views from its ramparts, open to walk around, and quaint cobbled streets, whose old buildings are home to restaurants and bars…though not that lively at any time. It is a good base for visitors to the region and has charm as well as some decent restaurants, in town and in the surrounding countryside.

Close to Calais, and a likely stop on your return is the Cite d’Europe shopping centre and various wine supermarkets and designer outlets. Cite de Europe, next to the Eurotunnel terminal, is a shopping centre on two levels with a huge supermarket (Carrefour) and other smaller shops and restaurants. Cite offers an alternative place to buy wines and beers before joining your Eurotunnel crossing.

Close to le Touquet, Etaples is a working fishing port at the mouth of the river Canche. Its fishermen run a co-operative with a fish market and a fish restaurant in the little town, other eateries nearby

Pas de Calais is not a wine growing area but it’s proximity to Flanders, and Belgium makes it ‘beer-drinking’ country and there is a wide range of local brews in the supermarkets

As some towns cater very much for the short trip visitor, brasserie-style eating is popular, and the ‘frite’, potato chip is also considered a regional accompaniment to more than the steak or sausage you may be used to. Mussels and chips is one of the most widely found dishes, in some places served with a range of different sauces.

A group of restaurants has formed the ‘Cote d’Opale Gourmand’, to share the best of what the region has to offer, keep an eye out for their sign.

HARDELOT

ABOUT HARDELOT

Hardelot

Hardelot, the seaside resort of the commune known as ‘Neufchatel-Hardelot’ is a residential area, much of which is set in ancient pine woods and dunes…these are where the 2 fabulous golf courses nestle, too…hence their names, Les Pins, & Les Dunes. Neither is by the sea, but the seafront is magnificent, offering a promenade and 13 km of wide sandy beach. The beach is known for the sporting activities based there. Speed- sailing and sand-yachting, kite surfing and kite boarding amongst them. For the size of the beach, the small seaside resort is relatively modest, though offers visitors a good enough choice of places to eat and local shops. Tourism is increasingly important, to bring in visitors outside the school holidays, when the local population increases. When it is busy with holiday-makers, the golf courses are quite empty, so summer is a good time to visit. Hardelot has an equestrian centre, tennis courts and lovely walks for beach-lovers and ramblers alike.

Pas de Calais

This region of France continues to be the most visited by British golfers. There have been golf courses in the region for over 100 years and the area boasts several excellent courses within easy reach of your arrival in France from your Channel crossing.

The coast, as you head south from Calais is known as the ‘Opal Coast’, reflecting the colours in the landscape and excellent light quality.

Wimereux

Wimereux is the first sizeable seaside town, whose promenade boast beach huts which bustle with holiday-makers in the summer. For the rest of the year, they stand empty, witness to the rolling tides which crash in on the bay’s rocky outcrops. The surrounding villages also offer lovely coastal walks and decent seafood. Long a destination for golfers, the course has been there, overlooking the English Channel for over a century. It is the only true links, with several holes offering sea views.

Boulogne-sur-Mer

Next is Boulogne-sur-Mer, still France’s largest fishing port and much of the local light industry is given over to fish processing-smoking, freezing and canning- and its distribution. Visit the old town and cathedral. Though it’s a bit ‘touristy’, a walk around the ramparts affords extensive views over surrounding sea and landscapes. The town has some of the most beautiful public gardens and roadside planting to be seen anywhere, particularly in the summer months.

Description: Older-style links layout. Small greens

Facilities: Friendly, but older style clubhouse, has all been modernised. Lunch available. Driving range. Few buggies

NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE

le-touquet-golf-course-big

NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE HOTELS

Golf du Médoc Resort

The names of the two 18-hole golf courses at Golf du Médoc hint at the resort’s beguiling setting. Rated among the best in Continental Europe, the Châteaux and Vignes courses take you into wine country in Bordeaux. You might need a few glasses of red after your round, with both testing your technique to the fullest. The Châteaux takes its inspiration from Scottish link courses, blending into unspoilt nature and offering wide fairways bordered by gorse. The Vignes is more of an obstacle course and is judiciously peppered with bunkers and maritime pine trees. Adding to the overall experience is a golf training centre and restaurant serving some of the finest wines from the Médoc vineyards. https://golfdumedocresort.com/

Relais de Margaux

Sitting on 45 hectares in sigh-inducing countryside in Médoc Regional Nature Park, on the banks of the Gironde estuary in the heart of the famous Margaux vineyards in Bordeaux, the 18-hole golf course at Relais de Margaux is a sheer joy to play because of its variety. Holes are bordered either by elm or ash trees, sometimes surrounded by lakes and occasionally skirt the sanctuary. And don’t let the lovely surroundings fool you – Relais de Margaux is challenging throughout with its narrow fairways and numerous bunkers. Start the day at the practice range and putting green and end it at a brasserie with a terrace that has panoramic views over the golf course. https://www.relais-margaux.fr/en/

NORMANDY

le-touquet-golf-course-big

ABOUT NORMANDY

The region commonly described as ‘Normandy’ covers a large and geographically very varied area and divides into ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’ Normandy, for administrative purposes. In golfing terms, this means distinct destinations, as the distances involved, and sometimes small country roads, preclude a short break encompassing more than one of these areas. We concentrate on the best golfing country…in 2 distinct places:

The Alabaster Coast

The chalky white cliffs give their name to this area, in which seaside courses combine with Saint-Saens [30 minutes inland] to complete a ‘circuit’. Stay at Saint-Saens or Dieppe. The excellent motorway links from the short Channel crossing to Calais mean you can stop off on the way down, or back, to enjoy one of the more northern courses.

Dieppe is Normandy’s fishing hotspot, so you’ll eat well in a wide choice of restaurants in the town. Hotels in the town centre make evenings easy, no need to drive anywhere from this base…and its own historic golf course is a few minutes along the coast.

Half an hour from the coast, The Chateau du Vaudichon at Saint-Saens, with rooms upstairs and a newer block, in coverted stables in the grounds, offers a great stay and play destination. Good half-board option and ideal for a group of any size. The town is small, and offers no real night-life, but you are in lush Normandy countryside.

Around Deauville

Chic and busy, the beautiful beach resorts of Deauville and Trouville will often leave visitors open-mouthed with delight. You have plenty of golf choice and ideally placed hotels, on the Deauville course, and in the town, if you prefer. In and out of the main summer season, when Deauville is the preferred destination of hordes of Parisians, there is lots to do in the town. The seafront, Casino, horse-racing and boutiques all have their attractions.

Normandy is proud of its links with the British, through peace-time and wars. The region produces fine apples, Calvados, cheese and cream, used to create some of the typical menu items.

Whichever base you choose, you will quickly see evidence of long-standing links between Normandy and the British Isles, and our travelling golfers.

Still relatively unspoiled, even if frequently revisited, Normandy offers fantastic fish and sea-food, wonderful dairy produce, rolling countryside and beautiful coastlines…oh, and golf!

NORMANDY HOTELS

Hôtel du Golf Barrière

A top hotel, peaceful location overlooking the golf course. Superb amenities, on-site and in surrounding chic beach resort of Deauville. Opportunity to discover other Normandy courses during your stay.

Just a couple of minutes from the centre of Dieppe, spacious rooms all overlook the sea. Provides an ideal place to stay, for the coastal courses, and just ½ hour from Saint-Saens.

The restaurant is called ‘Restaurant l’Entre Pôtes [‘amongst mates’] and offers good food and a friendly atmosphere.

Details: 7 large bedrooms are in the château, which houses the clubhouse and bar for the golf, as well as restaurant. 13 other rooms nearby in the converted stable block. Some rooms can take up to 4 people. The Hotel du Golf de Saint-Saëns is open from March through to end October. Half-board and golf-inclusive options available. Ideal for ‘play and stay’ breaks amongst your club-mates.

Hôtel Le Fer à Cheval

Just 50 metres from the beach and casino, a friendly welcome and comfortable night awaits at this family-owned hotel, right in the heart of Trouville, with its many restaurants and bars…and Deauville just a short walk away.

Description: Plenty of water, Florida-style, well-maintained modern design

Facilities: Old stud farm, transformed into modern facilities. Good restaurant, terrace with views over the valley and every convenience

Our view: Interesting layout and the modern sculptures around the course leave little to your imagination.

Golf Club Omaha Beach

Landscape: Woodland, water and sea are the themes at this complex.

Description: La Mer course, as its name suggests, runs down to the edge of the cliffs, afforting great views of the fishing village of Port en Bessin and the ocean beyond. The course then turns inland. Le Manoir course is set in wooded countryside, with some lakes, creating hazards.

Our view: This is a nice setting, the 2 courses providing every possible challenge to the golfer, and can be combined with a WWII history tour.

PARIS

le-touquet-golf-course-big

ABOUT PARIS

There is a surprising amount of beautiful countryside in the Parisian ‘green belt’. We have created our own descriptive area, we call PARIS OUTSKIRTS, because we feel to use the French administrative ‘departments’ would be more confusing for travellers from the UK.

We feature golf to the west and north of the city, but far enough from the bustle and traffic of France’s capital to be accessible and easy reached by fast roads from Calais. Your journey time in France is between 2 ½ and 3 hours. Of course, Paris itself may only be ½ and hour away by train from your hotel, so you may wish to pop in to the city on a day off.

North of Paris

Chantilly

Under 2 ½ hours’ drive from Calais, Chantilly is an historic town, some 50km north of Paris. The town is small and is home to the national horse museum, race track, restored château, splendid parks and gardens and the Chantilly Forest. This relatively quiet place is the source of crème Chantilly and lace. Chantilly Golf Club is a famous and private club, where green fees are sold on certain days of the week only, at a price! There are plenty of more affordable options, minutes from our chosen hotel.

The golf resort of Mont Griffon is within reach of Chantilly, [15 minutes away by car] but in the ‘Val de Oise’ area, a little further north of the capital. Also within easy reach, Auvers sur Oise and Argenteuil, which have great meaning for van Gogh aficionados. Beautiful rolling countryside and great views, with a convenient road network to enable golfers to visit a number of excellent members’ clubs, mostly with great on-site facilities.

West of Paris

Think ‘Versailles’ and once more you will find tradition, beautiful countryside and parkland in an historic part of the Parisian landscape.

Le Golf National is located in this part of the world and was the 2018 Ryder Cup venue. The quality of this gem has attracted the eyes of the golfing public and with good reason.

We have also included Le Golf Parc in this area, as it lays on the borders of Eure [Normandy], but is within the Parisian green belt, to the west. It is more of a ‘stay and play’ destination, though can be combined with several courses in easy driving distance.

The ‘Region Parisienne’ is home to many often highly-rated and exclusive golf clubs. Green fees at such clubs are not really possible, which is why we don’t raise your hopes by including them…you need to know a member to play courses like Morfontaine and Saint-Cloud.
